The action begins in a fictional provincialtown of the late nineteenth century. In Bryakhimov, which stands on the banks of the majestic Volga River, there is a widow with three daughters. The main goal of her life is to marry her children. That's why Harita Ignatievna invites guests to her house, despite the lack of funds. The two older daughters, she still managed to attach, but there was still one - Larissa. And although near the homeless girl and the boys are spinning, no one hurries to take her as a wife. The girl herself fell in love with Paratov, a wealthy shipowner. And when everyone hopes for the wedding, he suddenly, without saying a word, hurries away. Her husband's search continues.
With a broken heart, Larissa agrees to marryfor in love with her Karandyshev, but on the eve of the wedding the beloved returns. The girl goes with him to his steamer, spends the night with him. But in the morning Paratov admits that he is forced to marry a wealthy bride in order to save his fortune. Friends of Paratov (Knorov and Vozhevatov), who were among the admirers of Larisa, solder her fiancé, and they themselves play it out in a toss. The disgraced girl does not say anything about the offer to become Knurov's guardian. Meanwhile, having sobered up, Karandyshev catches up with the boat on the boat and again offers her hand and heart. But Larissa refuses and agrees to be an "expensive thing."
