Library and theater are the first institutes of culture,Born in the III millennium BC and lived to our times. The birthplace of the first libraries are the ancient civilizations of China and Egypt. On the territory of Europe, the first bookshelves include the libraries of Babylon and Kuta.
Over the centuries, the library and its functionssignificantly changed. From, in fact, the book depository (namely, the term is translated from Greek), it passed a long period of service to the elite. Then, as democracy developed, it became a public institution accessible to all layers of society. Its main functions are to obtain exhaustive information in all fields of knowledge, to strengthen and preserve cultural and social ties in society.
The same high goals serve, like any other, the library named after Lermontov. Penza - a city located in the central part of Russia - is rightfully proud of it.
And no matter what revolutions occur inthe library will long remain the center of the cultural life of any city, which it is impossible to imagine without them. The conditions for servicing visitors, the arrangement of reading places will change, new technologies will replace the old ones, but the library as a focus and source of knowledge will retain its role for a long time. New technologies require new buildings or reconstruction of old ones, which, as a rule, have historical and architectural value.
The new building received a library named afterLermontov. Penza built a beautiful building for its pride - the city book depository, which in 1992 turned 100 years old. At the very beginning of history, the Lermontov City Society rented the house of the wife of the provincial secretary EM Vakulenko to open here in 1892 a public reading room, now called the Lermontov Library. Penza considers the first day of issuing books to the city's population - October 2, 1892 - the date of the founding of the city book depository. Street Moscow, 7 - a place where the library lasted more than 9 years. Then there was a move to the more spacious wooden house of the junker chamber AP Dubenskiy.
Today, for libraries, the time of trials has come. The revolution that has occurred in the communication field poses vitally important questions for them. It is necessary to develop new concepts of development, which should lead to cardinal changes. Otherwise, libraries will become archives. Therefore, in order not to lose the reader, the book depositories not only modernize, but also unite on their squares various public organizations and cultural objects with the goal of turning the library into a regional multifunctional information complex. All the time challenges are fully answered by the present regional library named after Lermontov. Penza responsibly went to the construction of a new building, which is located in Arbekovo, a crossing located in the Oktyabrsky district of the city.
