The summary of the film

Events take place in the middle of the 19th century. At that time, the streets of American cities were filled with various criminal groups that constantly fought for power in their areas. Once in Manhattan, there was a clash between the "root" gang and a gang of immigrants who had recently arrived in New York. As a result of the skirmish at the hands of the leader of the "root" gang Bill Kuttinga, who was nicknamed "Butcher", died the leader of immigrants Wallon, called "Priest." He was of Irish descent. He had a young son, who was subsequently sent to a penal colony, where he could leave only sixteen years later. The young man decides to return to the area where he lived to take revenge on the gang leader for his father's death. Soon he realizes that it will not work quickly and alone, because it's not easy to get close to Bill Cutting. By a fluke, Amsterdam meets with her friend from childhood named Johnny Cirocco. The guy helps him get closer to the "Butcher", without causing suspicion. Now Amsterdam has the opportunity to kill his enemy. He decides to act trickier - kill Kuttinga in front of his entire gang during the celebration of the anniversary of the "indigenous" rule. At the last moment, Amsterdam is betrayed, and his plan fails. After these events, the young man decides to collect all the available Irish groups in order to challenge the "Butcher".
