Marina is not only a woman's name. This is also the direction in landscape painting, which itself was isolated in Holland at the beginning of the 17th century (from the Italian word "marine") and exists to this day in art. A seascape is, respectively, an artist who writes canvases of similar, maritime content. And they can be depicted as directly the seascape, and the scene of the sea battle or other event that occurs at sea.
Mariniste (Fr.) - the so-called landscape painters who paint marinas. In France there is even the title of the artist Morflot, which is appropriated to the outstanding "mariners". It can be awarded to photographers, sculptors and engravers. Many artists of the 17th century were essentially marine painters. For example, the seascape is the well-known Rembrandt baths of the Rhine, one of whose paintings is called "Christ during the storm on the Sea of Galilee" (1633). Some of the more modern painters are also at least partially marine painters.
In general, I must say, the sea and the ocean are alwaysattracted many artists of different countries with their greatness and simplicity. No exception - Russian art. The great Russian seascape is Ivan Aivazovsky (Hovhannes Ayvazyan). He painted both seascapes and battle painting. Even he participated in the fighting, watching the sea battles as if from within. His paintings were acquired by courtiers and kings. Among his friends are Bryullov and Glinka. One of the ranks he received is a painter of the General Staff of Morflot of Russia. His career was very successful. The paintings sold well and almost always brought the painter-seascape a popularity. And about 6000 of them were written on the sea theme!
In Feodosia, the painter opens an art school, which later becomes one of the cultural centers of the Crimean peninsula. The last painting, written by him at the age of 82 years, is the "Sea Bay". Another one remained unfinished. The most famous is the "Ninth Wave". According to his will, the whole gallery of sea paintings was donated to the city of Feodosia.
