Text encoding

Any computer user, regardless ofThe way he is promoted in technology, sometimes he encounters the need to receive a letter by e-mail. And what is the surprise of the recipient when he comes to the text of the form "SHGRI:? *:?% PANEMGNE SHCHELV (* PH: P:? A SCHISHCHYSHYY9-8? R *? PN" or similar "krakoziabry."

If you thought that this encrypted message fromrepresentatives of MI6 or the FSB, then you are mistaken, it will also be incorrect to assume that this letter is from extraterrestrial civilizations. In fact, everything is much simpler and more boring. The encoding of the text in the email you received does not match the encoding of your email application or browser.

When the mail client is not able totranscode this text, it displays "karkozyabry." And this means that it is necessary to use a specialized decryptor, that is, a program that can understand and correct the situation caused by a failure in determining the encoding of the text.

Of the programs written by Russian developers, it is best with such problems to "understand" the well-known product "Stirlitz".

In this article, I would like to talk briefly about the remarkable possibilities of this software product, created by Vsevolod Lukyanin.

"Stirlitz" may be needed in cases wherethe definition of the encoding of text in an application or letter is a difficult task, and it is necessary to read the text at any price. It easily decrypts texts in Russian, which were encoded in encodings: KOI-8r, ISO-8859-5, DOS, MAC and others. Stirlitz will also deal with HTML or Quoted Printable formats, Unicode, xxencode, base64, binhex, uuencode. If the block consists of several fragments, each of which has its own text encoding - then this situation will not put the program to a standstill. It correctly decodes each fragment and collects from them a recoded, readable block.

But on this the possibilities of "Shtirlitsa" do not end, except for decoding, it also can translate text from one encoding to another, available win, koi, mac, dos, lat, iso and others.

Working with the program is convenient and comfortable, if youyou need to quickly transcode some piece of the text coding, then just copy it to the clipboard and transfer it to the "Stirlitz" window, this block will automatically be recoded into the Win-1251 encoding. If necessary, you can configure the application in such a way that it will monitor the buffer and recode the text that is stored in it in the correct format.

I will say a few words about installing the program. After downloading it from the network and unpacking it to the hard disk, we see the following set of files.

Shtirlitz.exe is the program itself.

Shtirlitz.hlp - help files and user manual.

Shtirlitz.cnt - the continuation of the Help file.

Shtirlitz.lat - transcoding schemes

Shtirlitz.ncd - encoding file

Shtirlitz.vcb - dictionaries of the program

uninstall.txt - a guide for your actions in case of uninstallation

We double click the file Shtirlitz.exe, it will launch version 3.0 of the program, the latter at the moment. In the future, to facilitate the work, you can create a shortcut on the desktop for "Stirlitz".

In the final part of this article, you will find out what else there are ways to use this application.

Main - copy using CTRL + C, (or,selecting it with the mouse, and then right-clicking on it with the selected one and selecting the "copy" menu item) to the clipboard that text that needs to be recognized and pasted into the program window. If automatic recognition does not work and the text encoding is still not recognized, click the Decode button.

The backup method is that you canSet the program the types of files that it will try to decode. In order to make the necessary settings, go to the program "Explorer" and right click on the file that we need. In the resulting context menu select "open Stirlitz" and in the next window click Decode.
