The action of the story takes place in a smallArgentinean city. Among its inhabitants, a rumor spread that an unknown monster, nicknamed the sea devil, appeared in the sea. But the devil did evil selectively: from rich and unkind people he tore fishing gear, prevented from obtaining pearls, and helped the poor to save them during a storm.
Cruel world of people
The owner of the schooner "Medusa", the rich man Pedro Zurita, wants to make a lot of money on the myth of the sea devil, and therefore decides to catch him. Further, the events of the novel develop very dynamically, which also reflects a brief content. The amphibian man, as Zurita found out, lives in a submarine burrow. By order of Pedro, the exit from it is blocked by a metal net, but the devil manages to cut it and leave. Then Zurita decides to enter the house of a great scientist - Dr. Salvator. He sends an Indian to him with a sick girl. The doctor helps the child, and the grateful father asks for the service to the professor. After serving for several months, a new servant, Cristo, finally gets to know the "sea devil". They turned out to be an ordinary young man Ikhtiyandr, to whom Salvator transplanted the shark's gills instead of the sick lungs. Ichthyander spends most of his life in the sea, where he is surrounded by a beautiful and kind world of underwater inhabitants. The amphibian man (the brief of the novel takes us somewhere under the water, then into the world of ordinary people) once saves a sinking girl, and then falls in love with her. But on the shore some baleen stranger tells her that he saved her. Ichthyander shared his new impressions with the "kind" servant Cristo, who advised him to go to the city and find a girl. Together with Cristo, they go on a quest. Cristo has a completely different goal: he needs to bring Ichthyander to his brother Balthasar, where they will be met by Pedro Zurita. But when they come to the house of Balthasar, they find a beautiful girl there, in which Ichthyander recognizes his beloved. The young man runs out of the house in excitement and disappears. Adventure novel increasingly acquires a social connotation, as it authorizes the author AR Belyaev. The amphibian man (a short summary emphasizes the main storyline) gets to know the world of people and involuntarily compares it to the harmonious world of nature that he sees in the sea. He is amazed and disarmed by lies, hypocrisy, greed of people, and he is increasingly seeking to go under the water. But love keeps him in the cruel world of people.
Struggle for love
Ichthyander sails every day to the shore, disguises himself in an ordinary suit and meets Gutierrez. But one day a girl, walking along the shore with her friend Olsen, passes him a pearl necklace that slips out of her hands and falls into the sea. Gutierrez is in despair. But then Ichthyander jumps from the cliff into the waves and takes out the ornament from the bottom. After a while, Ichthyander confesses to the love of Gutierrez, but then Pedro Zurita appears and accuses her of having another groom walking with Ichthyander. A young man jumps into the bay and disappears for a long time. Gutierrez is convinced that he drowned. The time has passed, Ichthyander continues to seek meetings with Gutierrez, and we follow the story, reading the novel or its summary. The amphibian man meets Olsen once, they get acquainted, and he tells a sad story. Confident of the death of Ichthyander, Gutierrez marries a rich but hated Pedro Zurita. Ichthyander decides to go to the city, to the house of Zurita. On the way, the policeman stops him, but the young man escapes and comes to the house where Gutierrez now lives. He calls her, but Zurita, taking Ichthyander for a runaway convict, hits him with a shovel on the head and throws him into the pond. At night, Gutierrez goes into the garden and finds a "drowned man" in the pond, which suddenly emerges from the water and reveals his mystery to the girl. But then the people-amphibians are seized by the people of Zurita and are sent to the schooner. Now he must serve the greedy master, taking pearls from the seabed. What further does the novel or its summary tell? The amphibian man escapes from Zurita in Salvator's house. But Pedro organizes a criminal case against the doctor, accusing him of inhumane experiences. Salvator is offered to escape from prison, but he transfers this possibility to Ichthyander. The young man sails to South America to a friend of Salvator, and the doctor after a while goes free. Gutierrez gets divorced from Pedro Zurita and marries Olsen.
Conclusion
This is the summary. "Amphibian Man" is a work where, beyond the external effectiveness of an adventurous novel, a deep thought is revealed about the real and imaginary values of human life.
