The history of the glorious city of Rzhev originates inXI century. Its economic and military importance was due to the convenient location of the city, because of which for centuries it was fought for between the princes, whose possessions were adjacent to the city, as well as between Lithuania and Moscow. At the end of the XV century, Rzhev, by decree of Basil II, passed to Boris Tversky, after which he was divided by his sons. Consequently, part of the city on the bank of the Volga was called the Prince-Dmitriev side, on the second - the Prince Fedorovskaya.

A common opinion among scientists about the origin of the namecity ​​is missing. One assumption is directly related to the word "rye". It is supported by the fact that the local residents of today's Rzhev were called "rozhevichami". The remaining hypotheses are sent to the word "rusty" and the name of the river Zhava.

Rzhev, by the beginning of the eighteenth century, is becoming a major commercial and industrial center, with 25 different factories, manufactories, regional fairs, warehouses and piers.
