The beginning of history

True, World War II brought its ownadjustments in the conduct of the Stanley Cup, then in the NHL there are only 6 teams. And the Great Depression forced some owners to simply disband their clubs.

Expansion of the overseas league

Since the mid-1960s, the Nationalhockey league began to join more and more teams from the lower divisions, which were able to compete with the clubs, which from the very beginning were part of the NHL. Arising in those years, another hockey association VXA could compete with the NHL, and therefore it was decided to expand the league further.

The NHL clubs were in a more advantageous financial position, and in the late 1970s, the WCA ceased to exist, losing most of its teams.

The final composition of the NHL was fully formed by 2001, it included 30 teams from Canada and the United States.

Newcomers to the NHL

Due to the fact that in recent years, popularityhockey dropped and the first places went to baseball and basketball, the leadership of the NHL decided to admit a few newcomers to their ranks. Of those teams that applied to the NHL, so far, only one club has been decided. In the 2017/2018 season, the National Hockey League will be joined by a team from Las Vegas. The bid from Quebec has so far been postponed, and the decision on this club will probably be made by the end of 2017.
