A.P. Chekhov. "Ionich". Brief analysis

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov - a talented Russiana writer who very accurately reflected in his works the vices of the society of his era. A special place in his work is the series of short stories "The Little Trilogy" and "Ionich." Chekhov (an analysis of one of his works we will give below), wrote then in conditions of widespread social upsurge. He exposed that part of the intelligentsia, which not only does not take part in this upsurge, but, on the contrary, tries to isolate itself from life.

Czechs
Moved by indifference and fear, she does not want to know the problems of the people. With a huge satirical force, the theme of "futuristic life" reveals in his unpretentious at first glance Chekhov's creations.

"Ionich" tells us about the history of spiritual and moral degradation of man. In the story of 5 parts, 5 portraits of the main character.

The first is a portrait of Dr. Startsev, a young, intelligent, versed in art, with a good musical and literary taste, an energetic and cheerful person. This is how a real intellectual should be, as Chekhov believes (Ionich, Chapter 1).

The second portrait. Before us is a full-bodied young man who, on foot, prefers riding in a stroller. Deprived of the former vivacity, but in love, and therefore capable of some insane acts.

The third portrait. Startsev's feelings turned out to be shallow, love is passing. He quickly calms down after the experience of failure.

The fourth portrait. Startsev is stout, suffers from shortness of breath and already has three horses.

ionch chekhov analysis
He became closed, he prefers playing cards to the spiritual life, he is unpleasant in society. Industriousness was replaced by coldness, the capacity for pure, selfless feelings was extinguished.

Fifth portrait. Startsev grew fat, and as a result his voice became thin and sharp. He was overcome by greed. In relation to the sick, he lost all sensitivity, respect, compassion. He became rude, insolent, evil. The townsfolk consider him now their own and are simply called Ionich. For some 10 years there was a complete degradation of the personality. A complete nonentity shows the hero Chekhov.

"Ionich" does not give us unambiguous answers to thethe question of why there was such a rapid spiritual disintegration of the once energetic and talented representative of the young intelligentsia. Perhaps, in some way, Catherine Ivanovna is to blame, to which the doctor had tender feelings. Certainly, he himself is to blame for something. However, most of the blame lies precisely on the surrounding society Startseva, Chekhov said. Ionych, leaving disappointed after the explanation with the matured Katenka, thinks to himself: "What should this city be like, if even the most talented people in it are so mediocre?"

Czechs analysis

Semestvo of Turkins embodies all supposedlyadvanced and educated part of society. She cruelly ridicules her. "Ionich", the analysis of which was made above, is full of examples. At the beginning of the story, where the first visit of Startsev to the Turkins' house was described, the young doctor still observes the slightest details with an uncomplicated gaze: the fact that Vera Iosifovna's novel has nothing to do with real life, and the fact that Kotik has no musical talent, how stupid and senseless are the jokes of the master - but he does not pay much attention to this because of his love. When the shroud fell from the eyes, and Startsev saw all the vulgarity around him, he did not think of anything better than to become the same.
